Trade Show Booth Concept (2024)
Exhibition Design
The Berlin based textiles company Towel Studio wanted a design for a simple trade show booth that could be assembled and disassembled multiple times without the use of power tools.
The concept for the booth was taken from the ubiquitous drying racks found in homes across Europe. The framework for the booth became part of the display fixturing. Hardware, tools and stock could be stored within the empty spaces of the movable display tables, which could also double as dollies when transporting materials to and from transport.
Towel Studio vs Julian Grefe was a supporting musical project that ultimately manifested itself with functional art objects. Two musical pieces were created with sound recordings of the Towel Studio and then midi files were passed to Mariko who then translated the midi into woven patterns which were featured on the final housing for a 7 inch record. The graphics on the paper dust jacket show the interplay between the midi and weaving protocols.
This concept sprang from the history of Midi- the fundamental language used for electronic music- which had its roots in player piano rolls whose functionality were originally developed from weaving cards.
